Icata silk scarf

Uzbek ikat - dyeing threads to weaving, giving a blurred pattern. Silk scarf from Margilan: light, warm, with iridescent ornament.

Ikat is an Uzbek technique of dyeing threads to weaving: threads are painted according to a complex scheme, then the canvas is weaved, and the pattern is “blurred” along the edge – a characteristic soft border of colors, according to which ikat is recognized at first sight. We have silk scarves on the counter from Margilan, the center of Uzbek silk craft.

In Margilan, silk is made for centuries: the cocoons of the mulberry silkworm are unwound by hand, the threads are painted with natural or specially selected dyes according to a complex scheme of "binding" and weave the canvas on hand machines. Each scarf is a complete “coincidence” of dyeing and weaving rhythm; this is why the pattern is slightly blurred, without clear boundaries.

A silk scarf measuring 70×180 cm is a lightweight universal accessory: on the shoulders to the office, on the head in the heat, as a handkerchief to a bag, as a decor to a simple dress. Natural silk is warm in winter and cool in summer is one of the advantages of silk fiber over synthetics.

Caring for silk requires care: wash by hand in cool water with shampoo or soft silk detergent, do not squeeze, dry horizontally. Stroke from the back at a minimum temperature, through a thin fabric. With proper care, ikat retains color for years.
